How Are Memories Stored and Retrieved?

It is hard to imagine the life without memories. Stored in our brain, they contain our history, the skills we have ever learned and make us unique. It is in fact very little known about how they are stored and retrieved. Thanks to experiments on animals and the advent of human brain imaging, neuroscientists have already identified key brain regions and potential molecular mechanisms, but many important questions still remain open.
